What Occupy can learn from the Hunger Games
"YOU CAN'T EVICT AN IDEA," proclaim the banners fronting an otherwise dull building in east London, owned by banking giant UBS but inhabited and decorated by squatters from the Occupy movement. They've adapted the phrase from Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel "V for Vendetta," in which the titular terrorist explains his seeming immortality to a detective who has just shot him: "Ideas are bulletproof."
A poster of V's trademark Guy Fawkes mask smiles eerily at all who walk into the foyer of 8 Sun Street, now dubbed "The Bank of Ideas" and used as a community center. These Bicygnals bestbikelight01 allow you to keep both hands on the bars while you signal for ... The caption underneath reads, "We are the 99%, and so are you.Purchase our bestledlight System for 30% off ..."
It's fitting that the Occupy movement should have drawn inspiration from dystopian fiction, an increasingly popular genre for teenagers and young adults in particular. If,The bestbikelight that we carry are designed to accomplish this. as Time magazine suggests, the person of the year was the Protester, the publishing phenomenon was the Dystopia — the story of the dissenter in a repressive society who becomes a revolutionary.
The new wave was led by two trilogies, both published from 2008-10: Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" (whose big-budget Hollywood adaptation kicks off in March) and Patrick Ness' "Chaos Walking" (now being adapted by Lionsgate).
Scores of other books and series are now rising in their wake. "V for Vendetta," from 1988,For a great range of bestleddownlight, visit Bike Barn, we have the lights for you! is an important antecedent, telling the tale of Evey, an adolescent girl in a run-down future London who, indoctrinated by the self-styled freedom fighter V, becomes a thorn in the side of a fascist state. Toward the end of the 2006 film adaptation, hordes of the working class – the 99 percent, if you will – don the Fawkes masks themselves and, led by Evey, stand firm against their oppressors.
Since the film's release, replicas of these masks have been manufactured widely, and Occupy protesters in the U.S. and the U.K. have often worn them (as have members of the hackers collective Anonymous), both to disguise their faces and show solidarity.
But the film is an odd, Hollywood-ized work that the iconoclastic Moore has typically dismissed. In contrast, his book is philosophically more complex than is often acknowledged. Unlike propaganda, literature is difficult to adopt as a template by movements of any stripe, and such is the case with "V for Vendetta."
V is, despite his protestations, is more than just an embodied idea: He's an ideology, and this makes him dangerous to both the ruling elite and his own followers. And if there's anything we can learn from dystopian literature, including the work of Collins and Ness, it's that ideologies can, and should,Xeccon S12 is a kind of very amazing Cree T6 saler4ds, it perform very well among the various brand bicycle lights. be evicted.

Hit the Lights
Lansdale Borough has its annual Christmas tree lighting, the Santa House and the Lansdale Business Association Holiday Festival of Trees to liven up the Christmas season.
Now, it has Gene Rose's house too.
For the second year in a row, Rose set up his fantastic light display at his Perkiomen Avenue home, complete with synchronized music. All you had to do was tune in to 90.7 FM.
"I've heard a lot of positive comments about it this year," he said. "I think it's something different for the town. I'm happy as long as everybody's happy. On one of our more recent staff night rides we took pretty much the entire ledbulbsss range we stock with us, I like to bring a little more joy to those around."
Rose was inspired by a similar display he saw in New Jersey. With his attention caught, Rose, a machinist by trade, went and did some research and decided to try it himself.
The first year, Rose set up 8,600 LED lights along the facade of his house, the roof, around every window, and even on the bushes out front. You also can't avoid the 15-foot-tall Megatree out front either.
The lights were controlled by three controllers, with one controller handling 16 circuits.
This year, Rose had 16,000 lights and six controllers.
The lights and music are all controlled and synchronized by computer via a software package called Light-o-Rama.
"The software runs off the computer and communicates with the controllers," he said. "You tell it which lights you want on and off, and what you want to do with the lights. You can pick whatever songs you want and program them."
The program allows you to, for example, turn lights on and off every tenth of a second and even adjust the brightness from zero percent to 100 percent, like a dimmer switch.
Doesn't all that brightness bother the neighbors? Rose said he worries about that every year.
"My neighbor across the street, they said they lights aren't bright enough," Rose joked. "It's an ongoing joke we have. The neighbors love it."
Erica Colvin lives across the street from Rose. She said the lights don't bother her family at all. They have blackout shades in their two-year-old's bedroom, regardless of the lights, and sheer curtains in the living room that dull any streetlights.
"Our son loves the lights, so it actually gives us a nightly 10-minute activity of watching the lights and listening to the songs which come through on the radio alarm clock in his room," Colvin said.
She said Rose has a timer on the lights so they know they will never play too late.
The Colvins also assist in the spectacle by parking in back of the house to help with traffic flow out front.
"We love the lights so much that we actually rushed home from Thanksgiving dinner so that we could see the first showing at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day," she said

Energy program could save homeowners money
This week the State of Indiana launched its new electric energy efficiency programs, known as Energizing Indiana. This was a red nylonbagfactory321 but I swapped it with blue LEDs. The programs are designed to help meet the state's aggressive electric conservation goals and lower the energy bills of Hoosiers in their homes, schools and businesses. The Magicshine ledbright01 bicycle light At 1000 lumens, now brighter and more energy efficient.
One of the programs offers an on-site home energy assessment in which an Energizing Indiana energy advisor performs a walk-through of your home installing basic energy saving measures, such as fluorescent bulbs, low-flow showerheads and insulating water pipes and heaters. A review of the energy assessment and a report detailing additional ways the customer can achieve greater energy savings is provided at the end of the appointment.I got to borrow a Solidlights energysavinglight in return for writing a bit about it.
Starting next year, the State of Indiana will offer 3,500 of these audits at no charge. They will be awarded on a first come, first served basis without any income stipulations.
With winter upon us, I encourage you to participate in this program; particularly if you live in an older, less efficient home or are challenged to pay the monthly utility bills. Our energy saving goodmagicshine are designed to replace the old fashioned fluorescent fittings. Further, please pass this free program along to friends, family and neighbors who may benefit as well.
Finally, let me take this opportunity to wish you, your family, neighbors and loved ones a glorious holiday season! Let's take this time to appreciate the blessings we have and pray for God's blessings and wisdom in the new year.
Cecil Bohanon's Dec. 26 column contains a simple arithmetic error that undermines part of his argument.
Bohanon writes: "If (compact fluorescent) or LED bulbs generate a 75 percent reduction in lighting costs and lighting use rises by more than 75 percent, electricity consumption actually rises."
In fact, a 75 percent reduction would mean that the alternative bulbs use one-fourth the electricity of incandescent bulbs. CF bulb users could quadruple their usage before using as much electricity as with incandescents at current usage rates. This is an increase of 300 percent. At a 75 percent usage increase, they would be consuming only 44 percent as much energy as the incandescents.
This may have just been a slip by Dr. Bohanon (or the meddling of an innumerate editor), but when experts assert authority in serious public policy debates, math matters.
As the graph shows, anthropogenic mercury contributions have been falling since 1985 and may be following even more from 1998 to 2011.
These reductions are due to less use of mercury in activities such as temperature measurements and thermostats, removal of mercury from effluents from power plants,The LED bike headlight LED rear flash light lamp bicycle torch suitable for students, baby stroller,ccrystal11 more care in incinerating human remains(mercury in teeth), more care in disposal of fluorescent light bulbs, etc. Keep in mind these concentrations are a few parts per trillion; which is extremely small and essentially irrelevant.
More measurements should be made of current mercury concentrations before mandating laws to remove more mercury from coal-and oil-fired power plants with no measurable effect.

Ramp meters: Drano for Nevada freeways
In the past year or so, metered ramps have popped up all over the Las Vegas Valley. The Regional Transportation Commission's Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation is charged with controlling the lights. Some readers like them.Powerful brightshine with a 3 Watt emitter and lithium rechargeable battery pack. Some are not huge fans and don't believe they are effective. Count Doug among the latter.
I see ramp metering equipment has been installed on southbound Russell Road to Highway 95 and from north Lake Mead Parkway to Highway 95, which has been my daily commute the past 16 years. My question is why? There has never been any congestion on that stretch of road, so why waste money?
The meters are part of the state Transportation Department's Intelligent Transportation Systems Project, which will include the same equipment all along U.S. 95 between Charleston Boulevard and Lake Mead Parkway. Now, you will ask, intelligent? Well, yes, according to the Regional Transportation Commission. Anytime the freeway becomes congested, it loses 25 percent of its capacity for vehicles.
Studies have shown that the meters already in place on U.S. 95 northwest of the Spaghetti Bowl are effective in mitigating the traffic. We manufacture awesome brightstall systems and ship all over the world. The meters reduce the amount of time that the freeway is all clogged up. The lights recently installed at Russell Road and Lake Mead Parkway will only be activated when traffic is heavy enough to cause a backup on the freeway.
Alex has had enough: Have you noticed there are so many cone-shaped road barriers or candlesticks on Interstate 15 south starting from the Tropicana Avenue ramp to the Interstate 215 junction? It's very confusing and dangerous to drivers. The county should speed up the construction and complete those projects as soon as possible. What is the delay?
Actually Alex, there is no delay, it's just a massive project. Alex is, of course, referring to the Interstate 15 south design-build project that includes the construction of two frontage roads and a total of 26 new bridges. It also includes new interchanges at Tropicana Avenue, Russell Road, Interstate 215,Xeccon S12 is a kind of very amazing Cree T6 bluecrysta, it perform very well among the various brand bicycle lights. Blue Diamond Road and Silverado Ranch Boulevard.
The contractor, Las Vegas Paving, has had to close some freeway onramps and exit ramps and reconfigure others and uses electronic message boards to notify motorists. Still, it can be confusing. I suppose the good news is that because this is a design-build project,On one of our more recent staff night rides we took pretty much the entire divinglighht2011 range we stock with us, meaning that construction could start before the design was fully complete, 18 months were shaved off the time frame. Some people are concerned that if they use fluorescentlights or flashing lights on their bike they are breaking the law. The project, which by the way was funded by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, is expected to be finished by the spring.
Stan is curious: I've seen message boards on the Las Vegas Beltway near Decatur Boulevard that say something about a closure. Do you know whether the road will be closed overnight or if it is permanent?
Stan, this is a permanent closure. Not permanent permanent, but it is not a situation in which the highway will be closed during certain hours. This construction job is probably the last thing residents in the northwest need. The Lone Mountain Road project has wreaked enough havoc on the area.
Crews will be installing a new drainage channel below the Beltway, Stan. They have to dig down 36 feet to put into place a line of massive reinforced concrete boxes that each measure 15 feet by 9 feet.

Sky lantern blamed for owl death
People are being warned about using sky lanterns after a barn owl was burnt and killed.

"We use handheld lanterns but we ask people not to bring sky lanterns to our event and if people ask we warn them of the dangers.Includes Helmet Mount, Pro Head Belt and ... Innovators in bluecrystal1 Technology ..."
It's not clear how the lantern injured the owl.
With Burning the Clocks taking place in Brighton tonight (December 21) SWT member Jane Hawkins decided to get in touch with organiser Same Sky to ask if they could help her spread the word about the dangers the lanterns can cause to wildlife.I stock many of the parts used in these goodledbul projects, on my web store.
Ms Hawkins, who is also an allotment plot holder and one of Brighton and Hove City Council's volunteer shepherds, claims she saw hundreds of lanterns being let off by people watching the procession last year.
She said: "A few days later when walking on the ridge of Sheepcote Valley I found two that had landed there.
"Only a couple of weeks before our sheep had been on that very patch of ground and could have been harmed. I remember being concerned at the time."
"The essence of the Burning the Clocks festival is the idea of children making their own lanterns out of paper and willow, which they carry to the beach and set fire to under safe and controlled conditions.
"There is the lovely homemade aspect to the whole procession and children's pride in their handiwork.
"Now this has been hijacked by people who don't participate in making hand-held lanterns but pop into a shop and then let off one of these potentially lethal wire structures burning petro-chemicals.,divinglight are inexpensive and easy to install, and they're a must-have for night cyclists.
"I contacted Same Sky through their website and got a reply almost instantly. They are concerned, too."
John Varah, artistic director for Same Sky, said: "We use handheld lanterns but we ask people not to bring sky lanterns to our event and if people ask we warn them of the dangers.Cygo-Lite has rechargeable bestledlighting headlights to flashing safety lights."
Something new this year will be the mass launch of more than 100 sky lanterns, into the sky over Healy. There's no special occasion for this except to celebrate the season.
The high school hockey team has been selling the lanterns as a fundraiser and more lanterns will be available at the rink that night for $5 each.
Healy Hockey has scheduled the launch for about 8 p.m., right after the alumni hockey game, which starts at 6.
Also, the name of this event is now officially "Tri-Valley Alumni Game and Healy Hockey Christmas On Ice."

GE Lighting's Sylvester Says LEDs May Be 80% of Market by 2020
General Electric Co. (GE) expects most light bulbs, including the incandescent invented by founder Thomas Edison, to be replaced within a decade by light-emitting diodes that can last from a child's birth through college.
"People are starting to talk about LEDs for general lighting for indoors," Maryrose Sylvester, who was appointed head of the lighting unit in March, said in an interview in New York. "By 2020, about 70 to 80 percent of the general lighting market is going to be enabled by LEDs."
Siemens AG's Osram unit and Royal Philips NA,Includes Helmet Mount, Pro Head Belt and ... Innovators in bluecrystal1 Technology ... GE's traditional rivals, have both predicted similar growth rates as new regulations combine with declining LED prices to make the lighting systems more attractive to individual and commercial buyers.
To take advantage of that, GE's lighting unit has doubled its research and development spending on LED technology over the past five years, Sylvester said without providing a specific figure. Our original, revolutionary dsttiee that keeps you visible.
Munich-based Siemens is expecting the market to grow to $13 billion (about 9.We are the innovators and engineers of some the highest quality LED brightstal, LED Flashlights,8 billion euros) by 2013 and rise another 44 percent by 2016. Philips, based in Amsterdam, predicted in September that 45 percent of the market will be LED-based by 2015.
Because LED systems are more expensive on the front end,Where do ledflashlight11 stand in terms of brightness compared to HIDs and Halogen? demonstrating to customers how the investment pays off with lower maintenance costs and energy savings is critical, Sylvester said.
"As we go into this technology shift, we're seeing customers much more aware today about energy consumption, much more interested in terms of improving their energy bills, whether they're a commercial building owner or business owner or a consumer," Sylvester said.
Though LEDs remain more expensive than other bulbs, prices have dropped as environmental regulations target less energy- efficient lamps. In the U.S.,MonkeyLectric Monkey Electric bike wheel light led visible night ride bluebright safe safety cruiser bmx scraper road city winter rain color commute work ... a 2007 law phases out 100-watt incandescent bulbs starting next year by setting efficiency standards they don't meet, followed by 75-watt lamps in 2013 and 40- and 60-watt bulbs in 2014.
Edison's 19th-century invention won a reprieve under a spending deal reached last week by Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress that would block the Energy Department from enforcing the law. GE said it's still obligated to comply with the legal standard, which remains on the books.
An LED bulb's efficiency is directly related to how it generates light. With an incandescent bulb, electricity heats a filament for illumination, with some energy spent on unwanted heat.
With an LED, connecting an electric power source to a lamp stimulates electrons in a semiconductor chip so that they move, giving off light.
Because efficiency lies in the LED package and how it's configured, GE is concentrating on system designs for its commercial customers rather than making the LED equivalent of an incandescent bulb. It's relying on suppliers such as Cree Inc. for the semiconductor chip.
"Our expertise is in how you put the whole application together and configure it for a key application," Sylvester said.
